Polisario: Shadow of dissident Ahmed Khalil haunts Algerian DRS

khalilTo express opposition to the Polisario’s thesis or show any backing to the Western Sahara autonomy option are part of the red lines that must not be crossed, according to the Algerian military intelligence services (DRS.) Ahmad Khalil, an executive of the separatist front has seemingly crossed the red lines prompting the DRS to make him disappear. Today, his son is reiterating calls to know his father’s fate.

Ahmad Khalil has been reported missing in Algiers since April 2009. He had left the Polisario camps in Tindouf heading to the Algerian capital, where he was supposed to moderate a conference on human rights. Actually the meeting on human rights was a mere trap set by General Toufik’s DRS, which wanted to drive this rebellious Sahrawi away from the Tindouf camps.

Today, six years after the disappearance of the dissident who had been once close to the Polisario chief Mohamed Abdelaziz, the Khalil family requests again that Algeria gives clarification on the fate reserved for their loved one.

In a statement to the Spanish agency Europa Press, his son, Khalil Rachid, is asking that justice be served. He also calls for the mobilization of international human rights NGOs to put pressure on Algeria. If Ahmed Khalil is still alive, he is now 62 year old.

This is not Rachid Khalil’s first attempt to try to know the fate of his father. In 2014 in Geneva, he had referred the case of this disappearance to the UN Human Rights Council.

This mysterious abduction brings to minds the extreme sensitivity of the Algerian intelligence services over everything related to the Sahrawi movement. In Algeria, the Polisario falls under the exclusive scope of the DRS which bear no dissent or challenge to the line drawn to the Separatist front, claiming the independence of Western Sahara.
