Mohammed VI: No settlement is possible outside Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara, outside the Autonomy Initiative

King Mohammed VI expressed on Monday Morocco’s commitment to the dynamics initiated by the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, stressing that no settlement of the Sahara issue “is possible other than within the framework of Morocco’s full sovereignty over its Sahara, and within the Autonomy Initiative, which has been recognized by the international community as serious and credible”.

In a speech he delivered Monday evening on the occasion of the 42nd anniversary of the Green March, which ended in 1975 the presence of Spanish colonizers in the Moroccan Sahara and enabled Morocco to recover its territories, the sovereign also affirmed Morocco’s commitment to cooperate with the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for the Sahara, “as long as the principles and terms of reference of the Moroccan position are respected”.

It is up to “the parties that have fabricated this conflict to assume their full responsibility in order for a final settlement to be reached,” said King Mohammed VI, insisting that the Security Council is “the only international body responsible for overseeing the settlement process”.

The Moroccan sovereign recalled that Morocco’s claims for the recovery of its Sahara took place as soon as the Kingdom gained its independence, long before the Sahara issue was tabled at the United Nations in 1963, at a time when no claims regarding the liberation of the Sahara had been put forward, with the exception of Morocco’s demands, and even “long before Algeria became independent”.

At the internal level, the king added, Morocco will not sit idly by waiting for the desired solution to be found. The Kingdom will “continue to apply the development model specifically designed for these regions and seek, in parallel, to implement the advanced regionalization plan, which will enable the inhabitants of the region to run their own affairs democratically and to contribute to the region development,” said King Mohammed VI.
