EU pulls the rug out from under the feet of Algeria, the Polisario

The European Union (EU) has pulled the carpet from under the feet of the leaders of the so-called Sahrawi Republic “RASD” and its main sponsors, Algeria and South Africa.

“The EU will not recognize the SADR even if it participates in the Euro-African Summit” scheduled to take place in Abidjan, November 29 and 30, said Wednesday in Brussels, the spokesperson of the foreign and security policy commission of the European Union, Catherine Ray. She inflicted thus a stinging blow to the Polisario Front and its Algerian sponsor that were hoping to obtain a de facto recognition of this “SADR” at the summit.

The maneuvers of the Algerian and south African leaders were thus swept aside by the spokesperson of the European Union Commission who made it clear that “any participation in this summit, as it is the case for all international meetings of this nature, does not constitute a modification of the EU’s position on the non-recognition of SADR”.

To be clearer, Catherine Ray said at the daily press briefing “the EU will not recognize the SADR even if it participates in the summit with Africa,” reported the Spanish news agency “EFE”.

The European official’s firm statement has effectively dashed the hopes nurtured by Algeria that the Polisario’s participation in the summit would pave the way towards its recognition by the EU.

Actually, the EU’s decision is in perfect harmony with the position of the United Nations, which has never recognized the chimerical “SADR”, even if it delays the definitive settlement of the thorny issue of Western Sahara, in light of Morocco’s irrefutable legitimate historical rights over its southern provinces.

Moreover, to avoid the policy of the empty chair that has long benefited Morocco’s opponents, it is not excluded that the official Moroccan delegation to the EU-Africa summit in Abidjan will be led by King Mohammed VI in person. According to some media, a Moroccan delegation is already in Abidjan to prepare for the eventual royal trip.
